TOSHIYUKI IMAI
CINEMATOGRAPHER | CAMERA OPERATOR ( LOCAL 600 )
ABOUT
Toshi Imai is a Los Angeles-based cinematographer and Local 600 camera operator. Originally from Japan, he earned his BFA in Motion Pictures from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and is fluent in both English and Japanese.
He is especially known for his work with Jim Henson Studios, operating both live-action and digital puppets for shows like Earth to Ned (Disney+), Slumberkins (Apple TV+), Word Party (Netflix), and Splash and Bubbles (PBS KIDS). His cinematography spans high-stakes action, sci-fi, and fantasy, as well as historical dramas based on true events, heartwarming and educational children’s programming, and commercials. His ability to adapt visually and emotionally across genres—whether capturing high-intensity drama or playful, family-friendly content—is what makes his creative approach truly distinctive.
His work has been recognized with three PROMAX ASIA GOLD awards for “Best Drama Promotion” and “Best Documentary Promotion.” In addition to his narrative work, he has shot documentaries for networks like WOWOW, NHK, and National Geographic Asia, often bringing a handheld, grounded style from his documentary experience into his other projects.
An alum of Film Independent’s Project Involve, he also participated in the ASC Mentorship Program, where he was mentored by Jim Denault, ASC.
Toshi is passionate about collaborating with fellow creators, leveraging his unique experience in both narrative and documentary filmmaking to craft compelling and visually ambitious stories.
